Accessorial Charges

Accessorial Charges - Simple Explanations

Accessorial Charges (aka Supplemental charges),  can be Residential pick up or Delivery, non-commercial deliveries, over length or liftgate PU or DEL as examples.

LTL Accessorial Definitions

  • Residential Deliveries,  Any shipment destined to a residential home.  Often referred to RESI.  This includes a house where you use for your “home based business”.  RESI shipments may also incur added costs such as Liftgate Delivery charges, known as LG.  Anytime a shipment is over 75 lbs. the carriers collectively have determined it is in the best interest of the safety of the driver and the receiver.  Safety first – always!
  • Non Commercial Deliveries– deliveries to churches, schools, office buildings, shopping centers, golf courses, storage facilities….. ANY PICK UP OR DELIVERY THAT TAKE THE TRUCK OUT OF A BUSINESS PARK ARE SUBJECT TO THIS CHARGE
  • Over Length– Charges now apply on shipments that are 8′ foot long or greater.
  • Lift Gate–  LG for short – Utilization of rear mounted motorized unit to lower the shipment safely to the ground.  Bear in mind that carriers have varying sizes of lift gates that they use.  It is common practice to keep each individual handling unit under 1500 lbs so as to not create safety issues for the driver.  Max dims on a liftgate delivery would be 80 inches by 48 inches by 48 inches tall. (and they vary by carrier and geography)   If the pallet is not able to be safely moved onto the liftgate to lower to the ground, the driver may at his discretion determine that it is unsafe for delivery using a liftgate and return the shipment to the local terminal.  Safety first, period.
  • Detention– Carriers are charging for deliveries that are not ready at pick up, or require the driver to wait at delivery.
    • Some carriers are monitoring the time that their drivers are spending on both ends and are aggressively charging for delays.
  • Lumper Fees– Shipments to Grocery Warehouse and other Big Retail Stores will likely be subject to these fees.
  • Sort and Segregation Fees– When items must be sorted by specific commodity onto other pallets.
  • Attempted Pick ups- If freight is not ready when the truck arrives, an attempted pick up charge may apply.
  • Re-delivery  When the consignee does not accept the freight for whatever reason, a redelivery charge may be applicable.
  • Inside Delivery  If the shipment is delivering to a business, the inside delivery will be performed and the goods will be moved to the inside threshold of the door.  If the goods are too heavy or to large for 1 person to move, then the driver may opt to not perform for the inside delivery for safety reasons.
  • Appointment – Call Before Delivery  If the freight requires an appointment for the delivery, a call will be made, typically after the goods have arrived at the destination terminal.  Keep in mind that this also can delay the transit time by 1 delivery day.
  • Haz-Mat  Any shipment deemed hazardous by the NMFTA will be subject to an additional HAZMAT charge.
  • High Cost Delivery Certain geographic areas have what is called a High Cost Delivery surcharge.  NYC for example and shipments into and out of California (CA compliance) are 2 examples of these.
  • Reconsignment  This is when the shipment given to a carrier destined to Point A, needs to be rerouted to another location, such as Point B.  The recon charges typically contain 2 parts.  The reconsignment fee for the administrative part of correcting the documentation within a carriers platform (remember the BOL is a legal document) and any transportation charges if the shipment is not delivered by the same terminal where it is currently at.
  • Marking and Tagging These charges are applicable when a shipment is reconsigned to a different location and the carrier has to put the new updated address on the package to ensure it goes to the correct location.
  • Corrected Bill of Lading charge This is similar to the Reconsignment but only has to do with fixing the BOL to ensure the shipment gets delivered to the correct location.  Once again, the BOL is a legal document so everything needs to be correct and well documented.
  • White Glove Delivery  This entails specialized delivery requirements such as inside delivery, removal from a pallet, unpack the cartons, blanket wrapping a shipment and essentially providing a service above and beyond the standard dock to dock delivery.  This service is increasing in usage due to consignees requirements, but it does come at a much higher cost as it is a highly detailed specialized delivery.
  • C.O.D. Cash on delivery. There is typically a fee for the C.O.D. as well as processing fee for collecting a check at pick up.  This service is rarely used due to the ability to send money via the internet.
  • Storage of Cargo When freight sits at a delivering terminal for more than 48 hours, storage fees may apply.  Terminals want to pick up and delivery shipments, they do not want to hold shipments as that impedes their productivity.
  • After Hours PU and Delivery Fee When a shipment is Picked up or delivered after hours (other then 8-5 normal business hours )additional costs would be applicable.
